Community Initiative Brings Early Childhood Education to Gerehu Stage 5 Swamp

March, 25, 2025, Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea || In the heart of Gerehu Stage 5 swamp, a community-led initiative is transforming the landscape of early childhood education. The Early Childhood Development Center, which began as a humble church program, is now a beacon of hope for many families in the area.
The Early Childhood Development Center was established in response to the lack of access to early childhood education in Gerehu Stage 5. Initially operating out of a church due to financial constraints, the program has always aimed to provide quality early childhood education, preparing children for their educational journey and equipping them with essential life skills.
The center's mission extends beyond education. It also conducts church services on Sundays, offering discipleship to church members. Additionally, it runs various women's programs, including handcraft and gardening activities, fostering a sense of community and empowerment. These programs not only support the educational development of children but also contribute to the overall well-being of the community.
The funding from the Digicel Foundation, awarded through a Community Grant enabled the center to expand its reach and impact. The new facility provides a safe and nurturing environment for young children, addressing the critical need for quality early childhood education in this undeserved community.
The Early Childhood Development Center is a vital initiative that bridges the gap in education inequality in Gerehu Stage 5. By providing access to quality early childhood education, the program promotes better outcomes for children in the community. This project stands as a testament to the power of community-driven solutions in addressing significant social issues.
The official launch event took place on March 21, 2025, at the new center in Gerehu Stage 5. Community members, church members, the school board, students and parents, and Digicel Foundation team attended to celebrate this milestone.
Church Board Member, Mr John Numdi expressed gratitude and thanked the foundation for taking the first step and initiative to assist the people of Gerehu Stage 5 swamp. "We have a population of more than 6000 people, and our prayers have been answered. This center will now create opportunity for all children to sit in a better classroom and learn," he said.
The Early Childhood Development Center in Gerehu Stage 5 is more than just an educational facility; it is a symbol of hope and progress for the community. With the support of the Digicel Foundation and the dedication of the community, the center is poised to make a lasting impact on the lives of many children.
