Digicel Fiji affirms commitment to safety and well-being concerning 5G rollout

Suva, Fiji – Thursday, 28 March 2024 Digicel Fiji today reaffirmed its commitment to the safety and well-being of the people of Fiji as it prepares to introduce 5G technology.

Digicel Fiji CEO, Farid Mohammed, said; “We put the health and safety of our customers at the forefront of everything we do. We understand there may be questions surrounding the introduction of 5G technology, and we want to assure all Fijians that we are taking every measure to ensure a safe and seamless rollout of 5G technology.”

Digicel Fiji will be deploying 5G network capability through a process known as spectrum refarming. This utilises the existing network spectrum, reducing the potential for interference with current services used by customers and businesses.

From a health perspective, Digicel Fiji emphasises that there is no scientific evidence linking telecommunications technologies, including 5G, to adverse health impacts. Digicel Fiji aligns itself with the position of global health authorities, including the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Digicel Fiji highlights that existing Electromagnetic Energy (EME) safety standards encompass 5G technology. Digicel Fiji’s 5G devices and network have undergone rigorous testing to ensure compliance with Fiji’s established safety regulations.

An additional benefit of 5G technology lies in its inherent efficiency.

“Due to advancements in network design and device power management, 5G technology emits lower levels of EME compared to previous generations like 2G, 3G and 4G. This translates to a safer and more environmentally friendly network for everyone in Fiji,” explained Farid.

“We remain committed to transparent communication and ensuring the public is properly informed about the safety and benefits of 5G technology. We encourage individuals to rely on credible sources and expert opinions when assessing information related to telecommunications and health,” concluded Farid.

By prioritizing safety and responsible rollout practices, Digicel Fiji is paving the way for a future empowered by the transformative potential of 5G technology.
