Digicel Tonga completes the first phase of its 5G rollout covering about 30% of the population in Nuku’alofa

Nuku’alofa, Tonga – Thursday, June 25 2025

Digicel Tonga has completed a major expansion and technology upgrade to its mobile network in Nuku’alofa, reinforcing its ongoing commitment to providing improved network coverage and high-speed connectivity to empower its customers’ growing telecommunications and internet needs with a reliable connection.

Digicel Tonga started its 5G network rollout in December 2024. Over the past six months, it has upgraded 15 mobile sites, from Kolofoou in the east to Kolomouta in the west and Tofoa. This first phase of the rollout provides 5G coverage to about 30% of Nuku’alofa’s population.

Customers require a 5G-compatible device to use 5G. Customers with 5G-compatible iPhone or Samsung mobile devices may need to update their device’s operating system. They can look for the 5G symbol on the home screen of their mobile device. If the symbol is not visible, customers need to update the operating system and set their preferred network setting to 5G.

Digicel Tonga CEO, Daniel Horan, said; “We are incredibly proud to provide Tonga with a world-class 5G network. Almost one-third of Tonga is now able to access internet speeds in the hundreds of Mbps straight from a 5G compatible mobile device or modem. We have been working hard to make 5G-compatible devices readily available to customers, from$200. For our mobile customers, we have data plans starting at $5 a day for 3.5GB or $30 a month for 24GB, and for home users, we offer $70 for 70GB and a $200 unlimited plan for your streaming, surfing and catching every rugby match on the DTV app.”

This roll-out demonstrates Digicel Tonga’s commitment to customers.
